No matter how you look at it, the truth is that you'll never run out of new games to explore and play. One thing that you will most likely run out of, though, is the amount of money you can spend on entertainment purchases each month. Tack on the fact that the cost of video games are rising and tariffs are just around the corner, most gamers feel like they've been put in between a rock and a hard place when it comes to their expenses. So, what's the answer? Simple. Turn to the Epic Games Store for free games.
But how does the Epic Games Store work? Each and every week -- unless there are extenuating circumstances like holidays -- the Epic Games Store offers free games for users to download. Sometimes it's a single game, while other weeks it'll offer two to three games, if you're lucky. But you know what the best thing about it is? This isn't a rental service, you can keep these games forever as long as you download them before the week is over. You don't have to pay to sign up as a user, so it would be a real rookie error to miss out on this opportunity from Epic.
To provide some context: Epic's transition to establishing its own store began in 2019, following the massive success of its battle royale game, Fortnite. Fortnite continues to be an incredibly successful video game, partnering with brands and sponsors from Star Wars to Marvel to DC. Because of this success, it was only a matter of following the money that led Epic to launch its own storefront to directly compete with Valve's Steam platform. However, unlike Steam, a key feature that distinguished it was the availability of free games.
However, if you play games exclusively on console, we have some bad news. The Epic Games Store is available exclusively on PC. That means only PC users will be able to benefit from the incredible discounts and deals. (The store also has Mac games, but the free games aren't Mac-compatible.)
If you're hesitating, don't. As we've mentioned before, an Epic Games account is free and it hurts nobody to download games that -- even if you aren't fond of them -- you might feel the urge to play sometime in the future.
What's the new free game on the Epic Games Store this week? (May 22 to May 29)
Deliver at All Costs
If you're someone who loves the aesthetics of the 1950s and enjoy an open-world environment with intense action, a sense of absurdity that rivals slap-stick comedy as well as a cast of memorable characters, Deliver at All Costs could be just the game you're looking for.
Developed by Studio Far Out Games and published by KONAMI, players take on the role of Winston Green. Described as a "down-on-his-luck courier with a fiery temper and a mysterious past", Winston's life has him sprawling throughout a dynamic semi-open world. Just don't expect it to be just mail he delivers... Players will have to juggle items such as a giant marlin or even an active bomb. If you ask me, it's just an average day for a courier.
It isn't just the packages that you'll be delivering that will be reactive and chaotic. There are plenty of characters and NPCs that inhabit the world that will react to your deliveries and parcels. If you end up upsetting anyone, it could turn ugly.
Despite its absurd antics, Deliver at All Costs promises to deliver (ha) aesthetics that fit the 1950s, from its UI to its music. For players who love to immerse themselves in historical games, this sounds like the right adventure to get stuck in.
Usually $30, Deliver at All Costs is now available for free via the Epic Games Store. The game just launched today, so users are still figuring out what they like. This is a brand new game, so why wait to see what others think when you can give it a go and see if you'll like it?
Gigapocalypse
Let's be honest: Who among us hasn't imagined themselves as a giant Kaiju monster, tearing through cities, fighting other monsters and being an overall badass? If that sounds familiar, we recommend developer Goody Gamework's indie retro game Gigapocalypse.
Described as a "fast-paced" arcade action game, players can expect loud, brutal, anarchic gameplay from start to finish. Destruction is the name of the game, but as it turns out, plenty of enemies will do their utmost to stop you from destroying everything you can get your hands on. Seems unfair, if you ask us.
However, it isn't just wanton chaos. You'll also get the opportunity to care for your 'Giga' monster -- of which you have nine varieties to choose from -- in a Tamagotchi-like mini-game. These pets may be lethal, but that only means you can't slack in caring for them. It's better if you do, as caring will help you unlock new mutations and abilities.
Better yet, if you enjoy pixel art, Gigapocalypse has it in spades. This cute aesthetic makes blood, destruction and even combat come alive.
Usually $10, Gigapocalypse is available for free via the Epic Games Store. While it currently has no review score on the Epic Games Store, it is ranked as 'Very Positive' on Steam.
Sifu
If there's a game that's uncompromising with its design and aesthetics, it's Sloclap's Sifu. This third-person action brawler has players take on the role of martial-artist who seeks revenge after their father is killed. Its unique mechanics, combat and visual aesthetics earned it nominations in categories like Best Independent Game, Best Action Game and Best Fighting Game at the 2022 Game Awards.
Sifu's roguelike structure is conveyed both through its gameplay and the visuals of the protagonist (who you can play as either as a male or as a female). The more you die, the more you age, which forces your character to become slower and lose health.
However, you are able to offset this eventually through grinding and upgrading your abilities, though as with all roguelikes, this takes time. If you don't like roguelike gameplay, you'll fall off hard with Sifu.
Usually $40, Sifu is available for free via the Epic Games Store. It currently has an Epic Games Store rating of 4.8 out of 5, with audiences particularly enjoying Sifu's fantastic boss battles and unique visuals.
What will be free on the Epic Games Store next week? (May 29 to June 5)
Mystery game(s)
The Epic Games Store has yet to reveal which games will be available next week, but it does show three slots. You'll have to check back on May 29 to find out. Given past experiences, mystery games usually become ones to watch out for.
