Watch Ryan Gosling Blast Off in Cosmic Trailer for 'Project Hail Mary'

The trailer for Project Hail Mary, the sci-fi thriller adaptation of Andy Weir's 2021 novel, has just landed. The movie opens in theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026.

The story follows science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who finds himself on a spaceship millions of miles from home. He begins to remember his critical mission to decipher what's causing the sun to die out -- and hence protect the Earth from extinction.

The trailer opens with a shot of Ryland waking up aboard the spacecraft looking disheveled, then flashes back to him struggling with being chosen for the critical mission. ("I can't even moonwalk!") It then jumps between his space mission and his past on Earth, from his job as a sixth grade science teacher to his initial blastoff, as Harry Styles' Sign of the Times plays in the background.

Toward the end of the trailer, Ryland encounters a strange creature, then says in a recording, "So, I met an alien. He's kinda growing on me. At least he's not growing in me, you know, which was a concern for a little while."

Along with Gosling, the film also stars Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Rush Hour, Lost) and Milana Vayntrub (Other Space, This Is Us).

Project Hail Mary is the latest adaptation of one of Weir's novels. Weir also wrote The Martian, which hit the big screen in 2015 and stars Matt Damon. Given how popular that film was (it boasts a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes), and how highly acclaimed the Project Hail Mary book is, there appear to be high expectations for this movie, too. The first poster dropped on Friday and was greeted on social media with general excitement, and was followed by the official poster on Monday.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who worked together on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, teamed up again to direct Project Hail Mary. Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay for The Martian, returned to write the screenplay for Project Hail Mary. He serves as an executive producer on the upcoming film, alongside Patricia Whitcher, Sarah Esberg, Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida and Ken Kao. Gosling and Weir also serve as producers, as do Lord, Miller, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood and Rachel O'Connor.

There are still many more months before Project Hail Mary blasts into theaters, but we're sure to get more galactic glimpses into what's to come.
