Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Rumor Roundup: Wider and Ultra Phones May Be Coming

5 hours ago 1

Even though Samsung revealed its flagship Galaxy S26 lineup in February this year, it's not done unveiling new phones just yet. The company is likely to debut a new line of folding phones sometime soon, with Samsung already teasing new Z Fold and Z Flip phones in cryptic social media videos. Rumors are pointing to a July 22 event in London, in which Samsung could reveal a new line of foldable phones alongside wearable products such as the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Glasses

One of those foldables will likely be a new Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is said to be the successor to last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7. Since that phone won high praise as one of the top Android book-style foldables on the market, driven by its thinner design, anticipation is high for how the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will shape up. This could include a variant with a new wider design for its external display.

There are already plenty of rumors and purported leaks about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and its variations. Here's everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 so far.

Release date and pricing

While Samsung has not yet confirmed its next Galaxy Unpacked event, there are reports pointing to a London launch on July 22. According to Korea Economic TV and Seoul Economic Daily, the Z Fold and Flip series could debut later this month as part of the company's annual summer Galaxy Unpacked.

We haven't heard anything about its supposed price just yet, but we're suspecting that it might be more than the $2,000 Galaxy Z Fold 7.

That's because Samsung increased the price of the higher storage versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 this year, a mere nine months after its release. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 with 1TB of storage went from $2,420 to $2,500 and the 512GB variant went from $2,120 to $2,200. As the memory shortage crisis has already led other manufacturers including Apple to raise the price of its products, we're speculating that the same could happen to Samsung.

Model names: Fold? Ultra? Wide?

From all reports, it seems pretty clear that Samsung will release two different Galaxy Z Fold 8 models in July 2026. What's not particularly clear, however, is what they'll be called. At first, we heard that there'll be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as a successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and a wider model called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.

Now, however, we're seeing possible leaks that they'll be called something different. The wider model is the one that'll be the Galaxy Z Fold 8, while a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will instead have a similar design to last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7. According to 9to5Google, case listings from the WPC database seem to confirm this. At the very least, the "Ultra" branding seems to have appeared in the Bluetooth SIG database

Design differences

Name confusions aside, it seems fairly certain that one of the models will have a new, wider, passport-style chassis. Well-known source Sonny Dickson has posted some photos of what appear to be dummy units of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, the Z Fold 8 and the Z Flip 8, and the Fold 8 does look shorter and wider than the Z Fold 7. Mashable says that the phone appears to have a smaller 5.4-inch outer display along with a 7.6-inch inner screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Leaker Tarun Vats recently leaked that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will have a 7.6-inch Quad HD Plus internal display with a 4:3 ratio and a 5.5-inch Quad HD Plus cover display with a 16:10 ratio. He said that both use Dynamic AMOLED 2x panels with a 120Hz refresh rate (via Android Central).

Vats also reported that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will measure 123.9x81.9x9.7mm when folded and 123.9x161.4x4.5mm when unfolded, and that it'll weigh 201 grams. This aligns with some other leaks that said the Fold 8 feels surprisingly light

There's some speculation that Samsung is developing this wider format to compete directly against the potential iPhone Fold, which is rumored to be wider as well.

ZDNet Korea also recently reported that the Z Fold 8 uses 60-micrometer ultra-thin glass, which is more than 30% thicker than the 45-micrometer glass on the Z Fold 8 Ultra. A thicker ultra-thin glass could lead to improved creases and increased durability. This lines up with another leak that suggests the wider Z Fold 8 has a less noticeable crease than the Z Fold 8 Ultra.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, however, seems to have a nearly identical profile to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. As a reminder, that phone has a 6.5-inch outer display plus an 8-inch inner display. While it appears identical, however, leaker Ice Universe has recently posted that the display resolution on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is "significantly" improved over the Fold 7. Seeing as the Fold 7's outer screen is just 422 ppi and the inner display is only 368 ppi, that sounds like a welcome change.

According to Digital Citizen, the Fold 8 will be available in cream, graphite, lavender and pistachio, while the Fold 8 Ultra will be available in cream, graphite, green shadow and violet shadow.

Camera changes

Recent reports (via 9to5Google) from Korean publication Sisa Journal appear to indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will have two rear cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera as well as a 50-megapixel ultrawide. It's expected to have two 10-megapixel selfie cameras (one on the cover, one on the inside).

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, on the other hand, is expected to have three rear cameras, with a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 10-megapixel telephoto. It'll also have two 10-megapixel front-facing cameras.

Possible specs and battery life

Both Fold 8 models are expected to ship with the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, which is also in the most recent S26 handsets. The Fold 8 is rumored to ship with 12GB of RAM and a 4,800-mAh battery, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra is rumored to have a larger 5,000-mAh battery.

Both Fold 8 models are also rumored to come in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities
