Caught Up in T-Mobile’s Recent Outage? You Could Snag a Credit… If You Ask for It

If you’re a T-Mobile subscriber and found your phone in a nonworking SOS mode for hours last week, you might be able to get a credit on your next statement as compensation for the service interruption. But it’s not automatic.

The carrier suffered an outage on July 27 that affected more than 470,000 subscribers and lasted over six hours, according to Downdetector.

“We understand our service is critical to the lives and businesses of our customers, and we deeply regret the difficulties some customers experienced earlier this week,” a spokesperson for the carrier said in a statement. “We restored service as quickly as possible, addressed and resolved the technical challenges, and remain committed to providing the reliable experience our customers expect from us.”

Based on reports on Reddit and elsewhere, the outage did not affect customers equally: Some people noted that their phone was inactive, for example, while their spouse or child on the same account was still connected.

But there’s a bright spot for customers affected by the downtime. If you contact T-Mobile through its Customer Care teams — the easiest way is probably through the T-Life app — you can request a bill credit that will be applied to your account.

Amounts vary. Some customers reported $10 in credit, while others managed to get as much as $80 in credits that will span the next six months.

Despite T-Mobile’s claim of restored service, issues continue to roll through its network. Several days later, Downdetector still showed hundreds of reports of trouble, with 36% focusing on 5G home internet and 26% on mobile phone issues.
